Pauline Chan (May 23, 1973 - July 31, 2002), born as Zhao Jing and later known as Zhao Xuanwen after converting to Buddhism with the Buddhist name Minghui, was a Hong Kong actress. She committed suicide in 2002 due to emotional issues at the age of 29. Chan was born in Shanghai as an only child. Her parents divorced when she was 4, after which she was raised by her grandmother. At 12, she immigrated to Hong Kong with her mother and began working as a part-time model at 15. After failing to win the 1990 Miss Asia Pageant at 17, she was signed by a talent agency. Her first hosting job was for the show "Lun Zhuang". She entered the industry during the height of Hong Kong Category III films and appeared in several such films including "The Forbidden Legend Sex & Chopsticks", "I Come from Beijing", and "Red to Kill", with "The Forbidden Legend Sex & Chopsticks" becoming her signature work. Later in her career, Chan was constantly surrounded by rumors and controversies, and eventually began to suffer from mental instability due to drug use.
